Why a well-styled bed changes the whole room

A well-styled bed can become the visual anchor of the bedroom. When layers are thoughtfully arranged, the space can feel calmer and more organised, helping the room settle into a gentler rhythm as the day winds down. Styling a bed with intention can be a simple way to refresh your space and bring a sense of comfort and balance back into the room.

Simple choices, like pairing soft linen with a relaxed throw or adding cushions in complementary colours, can subtly shift the mood of the space. Over time, these small details may help turn the bedroom into a sanctuary for rest and relaxation, rather than just a place to sleep.

Bed styling ideas to elevate the everyday

Styling a bed doesn’t need to be reserved for special occasions or weekend resets. Small, thoughtful updates can help the bedroom feel more considered from day to day, creating a space that feels inviting when you step into it each evening. Here are some modern bed styling ideas to keep in mind:

  • Play with colour by mixing soft neutrals with one or two accent tones
  • Layer different textures, such as linen, cotton or knits, to add depth
  • Fold back the top layer of bedding to create a relaxed, lived-in feel
  • Add cushions in varying sizes to bring height and visual balance
  • Introduce a throw to soften the end of your bed and shift the mood of the space.

How to make a bed

Do you ever look at a beautifully made bed and wonder how it’s done? These simple steps take the guesswork out of well-made and styled beds. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making a bed: Clear off old bed linen and any throws or decorative pillows.

  • Lay down your mattress protector, slipping it over the corners to protect against any spills. If your protector doesn’t have edges, make sure it's secured in the corners evenly to protect your mattress.
  • Grab your fitted sheet. Start at the upper corners of your mattress and pull the sheet down. Make sure the corners are snug to the mattress.
  • Next, spread a top sheet over the mattress. Pull it all the way to the top edge and make sure it’s centred, draping evenly on all sides. Using a patterned sheet? Ensure your favourite print is facing down so it can be seen when you pull your linen over.
  • For extra warmth, lay out a thin quilt or blanket, lining it up with the top sheet. Tweak the overhang to ensure it’s even.
  • Tuck in the layers. Start at the bottom of the mattress and pull the corners tightly toward you. Tuck firmly underneath the mattress. Repeat on the other side.
  • Pull-on your quilt or doona and smooth for effect.
  • Fluff your pillows and prop them against the bed head.
  • Add a throw blanket at the end of the bed as the final finishing touch.

Expert style tip: Fold your quilt in half on the bed. This shows off the patterned sheets and blanket.

How to style a throw on the bed

A throw can be one of the simplest ways to add texture and softness to your bed. It brings an extra layer to the space, without needing to change your core bedding.

Some people prefer to drape a throw casually across the foot of the bed, allowing it to fall naturally for a relaxed, lived-in feel. Others may enjoy a more tailored look, with the throw folded neatly to create clean lines and gentle structure. Considering how the throw works alongside your quilt and cushions can help everything feel connected rather than competing for attention.

A step by step to bed cushions styling

Bed cushions can be both decorative and practical, helping create a polished look. Start by positioning your sleeping pillows at the back, propped neatly against the bedhead. If you use European pillows, they can sit behind your standard pillows to add height and softness, depending on the look you prefer. Next, add your feature cushions in front. Medium-sized cushions tend to work well as the main focal point, with one or two smaller cushions placed last to bring in shape and detail. This front-to-back layering can create depth without making the bed feel overstyled.

Making and styling different types of beds

Not all beds are created the same. The good news is that the same core styling principles still apply. Thoughtful layering and soft textures can be adapted to suit different bed styles without adding extra steps or complexity.

Whether your bed sits lower to the ground or has a more structured frame, small tweaks to proportions and placement can help the space feel cohesive. Here’s some quick tips on how to make a bed that shines, regardless of the type.

How to make a bunk bed

Does changing the linen on a kids bunk bed feel like a workout? Styling a bunk bed can take a little extra thought, particularly when space and access are limited. These tips can help make the process feel simpler while keeping the bed looking neat and inviting.

  • Start by stripping off the old linen. Then, give your mattress protector a shake and smooth it out.
  • Next up is the fitted sheet. Start from the top corners and slip the sheet over, sliding it down to the end. Use a stool for the top bunk to get better access to the corners. You may find it easier to lift the mattress off the slats so that half is sitting on the edge. Then, slip the sheet over the corners before sliding the mattress back into place.
  • With the mattress back on the slats, spread the sheet out. Is the bunk bed against the wall? Try and have more overhang on the side easiest to tuck in.
  • Save yourself the hassle of flat quilts that need to be tucked in and choose a fluffy blanket and quilt cover. The fluffier, the looser it will fall around the edges.
  • Give the pillows a good fluff and prop them against the bed head.
  • You can often get away with leaving bunk beds plain, but you can always add a small throw blanket that doesn’t drape or your favourite decorative cushion to add an element of style.

How to make a loft bed

Loft beds can be higher and harder to reach, though a few small adjustments can help make styling feel more manageable.

  • Start with a clean bed and get rid of the old linen.
  • Give the mattress protector a shake, smooth it down and tighten up the corners.
  • Use a stool or step so that you can reach the mattress without climbing onto the bed to slip on the fitted sheet.
  • Start at the far corner and slip the sheet on. Make sure the corners of the mattress are tucked in tight. You can also lift the mattress and prop it on the edge of the bed frame so that you have access to both corners.
  • Sometimes it’s easier to skip the flat sheet. However, if you want to use one, spread it out on the mattress and tuck it in the sides and bottom. Like a top bunk, don’t worry about spreading it so that it’s equal on both sides. Instead, have more overhang on the side closest to you to make tucking in easier.
  • Spread out the quilt or doona. Like a top bunk, go for a fluffier quilt that won’t lay flat - avoiding the need to tuck it in.
  • Add a small throw for decoration or add a pop of colour with your favourite pillow.
