Bedroom style, Organisation, Tips & tricks
If you don’t make your bed every day, you might like to listen to an amazing speech by Naval Adm. William McRaven. According to this Navy Seal, if you can’t do the little things right you’ll never do the big things right. Here are 5 reasons why making your bed every day could improve your life and, just maybe, change your life.
By making your bed in the morning, you’ve completed a small task. And like many things, this task will encourage you to complete another task. And then another one. And, let’s face it, for a job that only takes 5-10 minutes, the sense of accomplishment it gives you afterwards can’t be underestimated. It means you’ll start the day and continue the day, getting things done. So it’s definitely worth the effort!
Many of us like to think of our bedrooms as our own little oasis. It’s a place where we can retreat to relax and regroup. So the last thing you need when you walk into your oasis is crumpled bedding, a cluttered room and pillows all over the floor. Instead of relaxing, you’ll probably become stressed, annoyed and possibly angry. However, unlike many aspects of your life, this is the one area that you have total control over. You can easily make up your bed, put away clothes, fluff up pillows and even add a relaxing scented candle. It’s your space. Make the most of it.
If you have kids and you’d like them to make their beds and keep their rooms neat and tidy, it’s important that you set a good example. After all, if your bed is a mess of twisted sheets and there are four pillows on the floor, they’ll simply copy you. And it will be hard for them to break the habit later. So encourage them to make up their bed every morning and appreciate a neat, clutter-free space. If it’s tidy, they’ll enjoy the space much more and actually use it for their little adventures!
Making your bed every day is a good habit that makes you feel good. And once you get into the habit it might encourage you to start more good habits, because the feeling is so positive. This could include putting your clothes away straight away instead of stacking them onto a chair where they inevitably topple over and land on the floor. It might include putting shoes away, opening your curtains or keeping items in your bedroom to a minimum. Once you start, and realise how quickly you can finish these tasks, you may take these habits into other parts of the house, like the kitchen and lounge room. Before you know it, your whole house will be a wonderful, restful retreat.
Let’s face it, messy bedding can make a bedroom look untidy and unclean. It also means dust and dirt will float onto your sheets and underneath your quilt cover during the day. Plus items stored under your bed will be on show, not just to visitors but to you every time you walk into your bedroom. If you make up your bed every day, your sheets will stay cleaner longer, while your quilt cover and throw will hide any bits and pieces that are stored under your bed. With a made up bed, your bedroom will look neat and tidy and be much more inviting at the end of a long day.
So are you ready for your life-changing experience? When you think that making your bed takes approximately three minutes, it’s at least worth giving it a go. Try it for a week and see if you feel like you’re achieving something every morning, and whether it leads to other accomplishments – no matter how small!
