The TEMPUR® story began in the late 1960s when NASA scientists and engineers were tasked with creating a new material to help support and cushion astronauts during lift-off into outer space. NASA’s team of experts were eventually successful in creating a visco-elastic foam. It had the right absorption level and the soft, pressure-improving properties that the NASA team had sought rigorously.
Come the 1970s, news of this unique material reached the ears of TEMPUR®’s Swedish founders. They soon realised this NASA foam had the potential to improve support and comfort for healthcare patients. In 1988, TEMPUR®’s Danish scientists further refined the original material, and after two years of extensive testing, the original TEMPUR® Material was born. Later that year, they had a breakthrough and realised this material had the potential for sleeping on. After further refining its adaptability, TEMPUR® created and launched the world’s first visco-elastic foam mattress and pillow. At that moment in time, they rewrote the rules about how a mattress and pillow should feel.
Today, the TEMPUR® high-density foam material available in each of their mattresses and pillows has been thoughtfully designed to respond to your unique body and help you achieve improved comfort and nightly support. As a bonus, the fabric cover is removable and can be aired as you please.
