Protection and rotation is just for starters
Purchasing a new mattress can be exhausting, exciting and expensive. So when your new mattress is delivered, rather than just placing it on your bed and forgetting about it, we recommend you take good care of it over the next few years. With the right care and attention, a good mattress can last between 7-10 years so it’s worth reading our tips to ensure it lasts that long. After all, you don’t want to shop for a new mattress every year!
No matter how dainty you are, when you sleep, you sweat. In fact, some people can lose as much as 250 grams of water every night1! Your mattress soaks up this moisture every night and, over time, can attract dust mites. Within a few years, or even months, your new mattress may have soaked up litres and litres of sweat and may be home to millions of dust mites2.
Unfortunately, we can’t pop our mattress into the washing machine. But, fortunately, we can wash a mattress protector. So it’s a good idea to put a mattress protector on your brand new mattress. A good mattress protector should prevent most of the sweat from seeping into the mattress, plus it helps to protect it from other stains.
If you’ve just bought a wonderful new mattress the last thing you should do is place it on a saggy, broken-down bed frame3. Not only could it be bad for your mattress, it may be bad for your comfort. Troy Grzeschka, Snooze Mattress Buyer, adds that a mattress will last longer and feel more comfortable when used with a good quality and correct size base.
A new mattress is a bit like a new pair of shoes – it needs a bit of time to ‘break in’. The time needed to break in a mattress varies, depending on the manufacturer. However, according to Troy Grzeschka, it usually takes between 2-4 weeks. After this time, it’s a good idea to start rotating your mattress.
If you have a single-sided mattress (with a pillowtop), you should rotate your new mattress from end to end, every month for the first three months, then every three months after that. As Mr Grzeschka points out, regular rotating provides uniform wear to each side of the mattress and adjusts the sleeping surface evenly to help prolong mattress life. He also points out that the handles on a mattress, (if fitted) should be used only to position the mattress, not to lift or carry it.
If you have a mattress with customised sides, such as a My Side™ mattress, keep in mind that you may need to switch sides so that you are still sleeping on your customised side. Or you could use this as opportunity to rearrange your bedroom furniture and create a new look for your bedroom!
While a mattress protector should keep your mattress clean, unless you get a waterproof protector spills and stains may seep through. If you can, treat the spill or stain as quickly as possible. Use warm soapy water sparingly to soak the spill or stain. Try not to saturate the fabric or interior of the mattress as moisture can encourage mould growth. Make sure the mattress is completely dry before you place the protector and sheets back on. To speed up this process, use a hair dryer (on gentle setting) or place the mattress in the sun.
And finally, to help reduce dust and dust mites, vacuum your mattress with the upholstery attachment whenever you turn or rotate it.
We don’t mean they should be banned from sleeping on your new mattress! But they should be encouraged to jump on a trampoline, not your bed. (Or any bed for that matter!) You, and your kids, should also avoid standing on your mattress, bending your mattress and kneeling on the edges. If you sit on your mattress to put on your shoes, try to sit in a different spot each day or your mattress may start to sag prematurely.
