Product Safety Information

Freestanding bedroom furniture over 500mm in height can become unstable and may topple if climbed upon and can be especially dangerous to children. Serious injury or death may result. The degree of instability depends on many variables and the purchaser needs to be aware of the potential instability problems and seek to minimize them.

It is undesirable to place objects of interest to children in view of this type of furniture item. Children may be tempted to climb on the furniture item to retrieve the objects of interest with the result being that the furniture item may tip and cause injury or death of the child.

Furniture items can tip under certain circumstances; especially when placed on carpet, uneven or sloping flooring, or when subject to extreme use. Therefore care must be taken especially where small children can access any chest of drawers or bookcases or similar items.

We highly recommend that all tall chests are fixed to a wall to help prevent this happening. We recommend that a qualified trade’s person installs the fixing device supplied to a wall with an appropriate fixing.

We also recommend avoiding actions such as opening multiple drawers at once, allowing children to climb on furniture, putting pressure on open drawers or any action that could cause this chest of drawers to fall forward.

Safety Tips:

  • Attach, mount, bolt or otherwise secure furniture to walls and floors.
  • Do not put heavy items on top shelves of bookcases.
  • Place televisions at the back of cabinets or secure them to the wall.
  • Discourage small children from climbing on furniture.
  • Do not put tempting items such as favourite toys on top of furniture that encourage children to climb up and reach.
  • Do not place unstable furniture near where children play.
  • Put locking devices on all drawers to prevent children opening them and using them as steps.
