In this month’s Ask the Stylist feature, we talk to Debra Bowen about achieving a fresh, romantic bedroom look, inspired by our Shabby Chic style Collection.

It’s fair to say that not every partner is in touch with their feminine side! Especially not to the extent of having an all-pink bed linen set or bedroom with pink toned accessories. But there is a way to bring a softer, vintage feel to a bedroom without making it too feminine. I like to mix it with colours you might not expect, like khaki, navy, grey or plum. Pink glass also mixes well with brass or jewel coloured ceramics. Or go for a neutral backdrop with white walls or bedroom furniture.
Soft lighting and muted colours are essential. I like faceted glass ornaments, chandelier type lighting, hues of lavender and pastel pink in mohair blankets and printed coverlets.
White Duck with a feature in Aura or Ellen, plus white timber painted furniture like the Corsica bedroom furniture range from Snooze.

My step-mum was doing shabby chic decades before it was a thing and I would love staying in the guest bedroom with its Louis French bed covered in eiderdowns bought in some antique bizarre. Or, there is that bedroom in Marrakesh in winter with the corner fireplace, its crackling flames in the night and hanging candles from the ceilings.

When I think of Shabby Chic I think of a modern bohemian lifestyle look. Old doors with many years of layered paint together with whitewashed floors, aged French linen, soft pastel prints and layering of blankets and quilts.
