Say hello to bedroom furniture designed for how we live today
Our bedrooms are no longer just the place we head to in the evening to go to sleep. These days, for many people, bedrooms are an escape haven, or a sanctuary, a place where we can retreat to enjoy some down time or me-time. For this reason, we now expect more when it comes to bedroom furniture because we’d like this precious space to reflect our personality as well as our needs. So while there is no right or wrong way to design a bedroom, there are a few core ingredients that can help us create our own private oasis. But what are those ingredients and how have they evolved to fit in with our modern lifestyle?
As more and more people set up home in apartments or houses with smaller bedrooms, furniture makers have had to rethink how they design and manufacture beds and bedside tables. Traditionally, we’ve purchased a bed with matching bedside tables and some sort of storage unit to make up a suite. But now, bed makers have given the whole scene a bit of a shake up and come up with some fantastic designs, including storage drawers in the base and retractable bedside tables. These innovative space-saving tables are pulled out when you need them, then pushed back when you don’t. Nifty and neat and a little bit niche!
SPACE SAVING TIP: If your bedroom is on the small side, think about a double bed as they’re only around 1370mm wide.
Bed designers don’t just think about aesthetics anymore, although that’s probably high up on their list. As our lives become busier and room sizes shrink, we’re also starting to think about how we move around our bedroom. This is where designs like Southbank come in. This with the option of an upholstered base, pictured here, to make collisions with corners easier to bear. And if you’re really thinking forward, match it to the Southbank bedside tables and opt for the tech pack, which features a sensor light and two USB ports.
Another wonderful evolution in the bedroom furniture industry is the availability of bespoke ranges. Like the base but prefer another headboard? No problem. These ranges allow you to mix and match the various components that make up a bed frame so you can take control of the design. For starters, you can choose from floating bases, standard bases and bases with storage. Choose the headboard then decide on the size and timber stain. It’s just another way to help you create your very own bedroom oasis.
