11 Questions with Leading Australian Stylists
Coastal walks, a garden rich in native plants, Scandinavian looks mixed with Japanese aesthetics - these are just some of the influences listed by stylist, Debra Bowen, as she goes about creating the perfect coastal retreat for our latest Style Collection photo shoot.
In the first of our ‘ASK THE STYLIST’ feature series, Debra (a highly sought after stylist with a CV that reads like the ‘who’s who’ in homewares and interior design) shares a few of her favourite things along with ideas for achieving that easy, breezy coastal look at home.
Coastal walks; there is so much visual inspiration amongst the driftwood, shells and washed up ocean treasure.
I’m also really drawn to indigo dyed fabric.
The Japanese simplicity and aesthetic is becoming more prevalent in styling and design and these hand crafted fabrics have wonderfully unique colours and textures, perfect for setting a beachside environment.
A king size bed and a beautiful feature rug, for example Bayliss Marrakech or Bayliss Harvest. It’s amazing how something as simple as a rug can immediately bring warmth and soul to a big room.
I actually keep my bed very simple, not a multitude of cushions. I love good quality bedding and linen and I change my colour palette regularly. Linen House has great coastal-inspired prints to make summer last that little bit longer!
Soft lighting, fresh air, a good book and my cats snuggled up on the bed.
True Blue for a darker tone and Swift for a lighter tone.
I can't pick one particular style icon as there are so many talented and stylish people out there. We’re lucky to have such a wide access to the creative world. I'm mostly inspired by art and nature, I believe in following your heart and only having pieces you truly love in your home. Don't be afraid to experiment and mix things up, just as you would with a recipe. I don't read any magazines or blogs regularly but I like the online mag, Mr Wolf from Sweden. I also enjoy finding obscure titles whilst travelling.
Who wouldn’t want somewhere 5-star with a view of the ocean? I'm also really happy with an Airbnb on the Sicilian coast.
In my own kitchen or Top Shop in Byron Bay. Instagram @topshopbybyronbay
'Princess Bride', a classic cult movie from the 70's, 'It’s Complicated', set in the most beautiful house and 'The Shining'. We love heading down the coast and snuggling up in our throws to watch a good thriller.
The new day.
